General Description

General Transportation Tech I

Performs entry-level work related to transportation activities such as construction inspection; routine and contract maintenance inspection; basic roadway maintenance and repair; light and heavy equipment operation; preventive and minor maintenance on equipment; assisting with traffic control and helping the public during emergency situations.Work requires contact with private entities. Employees at this level perform assignments following specific instructions and are subject to frequent review by the immediate supervisor.

General Transportation Tech II

Performs [routine] work related to transportation activities such as construction inspection; routine and contract maintenance inspection; light and heavy equipment operation; preventive and minor maintenance on equipment; [traffic control]; helping the public during emergency situations; and [training other employees]. Work requires contact with private entities. [Employees at this level perform work independently on assignments; however, all unusual issues are referred to the supervisor. NOTE: See Other Conditions comment regarding bridge inspection work].

Duties

The essential duties for this job include:

General Transportation Tech I

Assists in identifying, repairing and installing signs, delineators, mail box supports and posts; performs basic welding as needed; as required uses/moves equipment/tools, materials and products related to these activities.
Assists in providing support to local law enforcement officials at accident sites; assists stranded motorists as required.
Assists in sanding or cleaning bridges and roads, posting warning signs, helping the public and performing other work as
directed during emergency situations such as floods, tornadoes, hurricanes, snowstorms, accidents and hazardous material spills.
Assists with traffic control; places and gathers cones, warning signs and barricades; flags traffic.
Learns to operate heavy equipment such as a front-end loader-one and a half cubic yards or more, tractor-trailer haul
truck, large dragline, shovel, paint striper and dump truck.
Learns to operate light equipment such as a front-end loader-one and a quarter cubic yards or less, pneumatic roller,
rotary broom, spreader box, backhoe, street sweeper and mower.
Maintains highways and rights-of-way; performs roadway repairs; erects and repairs guard rails, highway markers and signs; hauls materials and equipment to job sites.
Move/picks up litter and roadway debris.
Performs preventive maintenance inspections (PMI), routine servicing and minor repairs on equipment and completes various
required reports including time-keeping, equipment forms, inventory, accident forms and PMI.
Performs other job responsibilities as assigned.

General Transportation Tech II

Inspects construction and routine contract maintenance methods and workmanship to ensure contractors build and maintain
roadways, bridges, traffic signals and related highway structures in accordance with plans and specifications.
Maintains highways and rights-of-way; performs skilled roadway repairs; erects and repairs guard rails, highway markers
and signs; hauls materials and equipment to job sites.
Operates heavy equipment such as a front-end loader-one and a half cubic yards or more, tractor-trailer haul truck, large dragline, shovel, paint striper and dump truck.
Operates light equipment such as a front-end loader-one and a quarter cubic yards or less, pneumatic roller, rotary broom, spreader box, backhoe, street sweeper and mower.
Assists with traffic control; places and gathers cones, warning signs and barricades; flags traffic.
Maintains a daily activity of work in progress and status of completion.
Move/picks up litter and roadway debris.
Mows rights-of-way and picnic and rest areas; performs plant and landscape maintenance including trimming trees and
brush.
Performs preventive maintenance inspections (PMI), routine servicing and minor repairs on equipment and completes various
required reports including time-keeping, equipment forms, inventory, accident forms and PMI.
Performs other job responsibilities as assigned.

Licenses and Certifications

The following Licenses and/or Certifications are required for this job:

Valid Class C Driver License at time of application
Must have or obtain driver’s license class A-CDL within 90 days of employment

Safety Impact Certifications are not required at the time of application. As the certification will be issued by TXDOT at the time of hire.

This is a Commercial Driver position and will be subject to random drug testing.
